Frequently asked questions in our industry
Pointing is the term given to the ‘finish’ that is between the bricks or stone used to build your house. Depending on the age of the building, the mortar used to lay the stone or brick will either be made from lime, or more recently, cement. Incorrect mortars used such as Portland cement in lime built masonry causes major damage such as brick spalling, cracking, and damp.
The National Institute for Standards and Technology reports brick masonry has a 100-year life span. Clearly though many brick buildings last longer than this as shown by some of the oldest structures around that still stand today.
Materials used to make bricks such as clay and shale are natural resources that are in great abundance and bricks will tend to last a lot longer than other building materials. This means that the toll on the environment will be reduced. 80% of brick kilns use natural gas in their production. Furthermore due to bricks being a great insulator, they tend to be cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter meaning less energy and less money is spent on air conditioning and heating.
Bricks natural colour of red will never fade due to the fact that they don’t have an outer painted exterior. However, bricks will start to look dirty over time, but with careful cleaning methods you will easily be able to achieve the bricks original colour.
